Final Draft
This is the most used program for script writing and is called the "industry standard" but that's only because a lot of production companies and studios use this and so exchanging documents between producers and writers is easy if everyone is writing in the same file format. But the problem is, it hasn't moved on in many years and is basically just a script formatter. It has online collaboration and revision tracking for A/B pages but no story or character development tools.. and you can't outline in it either.
Movie Magic Screenwriter
This is also a popular application for writing scripts but it is very clunky and doesn't feel like it was designed for creatives. In fact, you can tell it was designed for Windows and not Mac users because it has so many preference options and they, along with the system menus and features, are very poorly thought out. Nothing feels intuitive and every option is over-complicated. Unlike Movie Outline, it doesn't step-outline or help you develop and structure your story and is essentialy just a screenplay formatter.
Celtx
This is a new application that relies heavily on the internet and the collaboration of developers around the world to contribute freely to its development.. because it's free. While free may sound good that isn't always the case and Celtx is no exception. It is lacking in basic functionality and although it has a few handy features it does not feel very intuitive or that it was developed by writers.
